The Woodlands Township board of directors approved an interlocal agreement with Montgomery County for the contract and construction of bike lane improvements on Lake Woodlands Drive at a Dec. 4 meeting.

The details

In total, about $308,552 has been allocated for the bike lane project, according to the meeting notes.

On Aug. 18, the township approved a task order with Halff Engineering for approximately $70,000, which left the project about $238,552, according to the meeting notes.

The interlocal agreement with Montgomery County will allow the township to make the improvements through a contractor. The county will provide the proposed improvements and construction management using a contractor for approximately $171,092.50, in addition to 12% of the contingency funds set aside, bringing the cost of the project to $191,623, according to the meeting notes.

The background

A 2016 Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan for The Woodlands Township identified the need for a central bicycle lane on Lake Woodlands Drive, according to previous coverage by Community Impact.

The improvement is not an enhancement on the shoulder or pavement. This is just the intersection improvements, while the county is working on shoulder improvements, Township Chief Operating Officer Chris Nunes said.

Quote of note

The township board approached Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler to work with the county on the bike lane improvements as part of the road bond project for the shoulder improvement on Lake Woodlands Drive, board chair Brad Bailey said at the meeting.

“I think it is important to note that these funds are from the bond,” Bailey said. “It’s a perfect example that we work collaboratively with our county partner.”

Next steps

The project, which is being coordinated with Montgomery County, is expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2026, Nunes said at the meeting.
