The city of Shenandoah on June 25 approved Republic Services, a solid waste company, as the new solid waste and recycling service for residents.

The gist

Joseph Peart, director of public works for the city of Shenandoah, presented the city with a recommendation after receiving four bids as of June 4. The choice was narrowed to two companies because the other two did not submit a price for a base bid, Peart stated.

Republic Services was chosen as the company with the lowest monthly price, totaling $23.49 per household per month, compared to the city’s current price of $25.38. As of May, 645 of the city's 1,252 customers are subscribed to recycling services, according to the packet agenda. However, under Republic Services, all households will receive recycling services, according to agenda materials.

“There is a program for elderly/disabled [residents] for back door services where the customer would contact the contractor to get on a list and some proof [is] required,” Peart said regarding services for the community.

The city will see a five-year savings of almost $494,000 under the new plan, according to meeting materials.

The new program will begin Oct. 1 for residents.
