The Woodlands Township board of directors created a number of committees to address topics such as potential plans for golf facilities on South Gosling Park on May 22 following a two-day strategic planning workshop.

What you need to know

During the board of directors meeting May 22, board members agreed to create three new ad hoc committees–an option municipalities and special purpose districts have to form a group of individuals to look into specific topics—based on discussion from the board's strategic planning session held May 12-13.

The three new committees will focus on re-evaluating the law enforcement contract with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in The Woodlands, addressing transportation issues and discussing options for the South Gosling Park, which could include a potential golfing space.

  • Citizen members: Will Murphy, Scott Lyle and Kyle Watson
Directors also approved adding a new priority to the existing ad hoc committee on economic development which would focus on improving pedestrian mobility in the Town Center area.

"Our law enforcement contract is up for renewal and we have a new sheriff, we have a new chairman. It's a lot on one person to do with staff ... I think the board voted on as well, in this strategic session to have the Public Safety Committee to help deliver this contract," Bailey said. "It's one of our biggest spends that we have, and I think we all agree that public safety is our most important issue."

Board members also approved moving forward on a project with Verizon Wireless to install a number of "cell nodes" in Panther Creek, Alden Bridge and Cochran's Crossing villages which will provide boosted cell signal services in those areas. Township Chief Operating Officer Chris Nunes said there are already a number of nodes across the township, and they are attached to light poles which will also be in the same style and design as existing street lights in The Woodlands.
