How we got here
The decision comes following the Dec. 9 resignation of trustee Tiffany Baumann Nelson, who was elected to the board in 2022, as previously reported by Community Impact. Nelson is currently campaigning for the Texas State Board of Education District 6 seat in the Republican primary March 3.
“We are grateful for her service to the students, the staff and the families of Conroe ISD. We wish her the very best as she pursues the next chapter,” board President Misty Oldenweller said at the Dec. 17 meeting.
The board considered the following options on how to move forward with the Position 1 vacancy:
- Taking no action
- Appointing a new member
- Completing the application and interview process before appointing a new member
- Calling a special election
“I don’t think those [options 1 and 2] are prudent decisions for us to make ... the position would go unfilled for almost one year, and in my opinion that’s too long for a period for the board operate under capacity and can potentially hold us up in the business in the district,” trustee Lindsay Dawson said regarding the options.
“I look forward to all the applications that are received, reviewing those and making this process [as] transparent as possible and filling this position with someone who is interested and qualified,” trustee Melissa Dungan said.
Also on the agenda
The district also named Nina Norman as the new principal for Oak Ridge High School.
What happens next
Applications for Position 1 will open at noon Dec. 18 and must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Jan. 6 on the district’s website.
