The Montgomery County Historical Commission on Oct. 30 held a dedication ceremony for a historical marker at Conroe ISD's Mittie J. Campbell Elementary School, which opened in August.

The gist

The dedication included the unveiling of the historical marker and a reading about Mittie J. Campbell and her accomplishments within CISD as the first Black woman to serve as a principal in the district, according to a news release from the Montgomery County Historical Commission. Attendance included two of Campbell's family members—her great-nephew, Myron Washington, and his daughter, Tramikia Davis.

"The effort to get a school named for Mittie J. Campbell again was one of the main goals for the Conroe Community Cemetery Restoration Project," commission officials said in a statement.

CISD officials held a ceremony inside the school, where they unveiled Campbell's official portrait, painted by a student artist from The Woodlands College Park High School, according to a news release.
