The Conroe ISD board of trustees has approved the hiring of David Vinson as the new superintendent in a 7-0 vote at its Sept. 18 special board meeting.

“His student-centered leadership, record of academic excellence and deep respect for educators align with our priorities for every child in every classroom," board President Misty Odenweller said. "We look forward to partnering with him to elevate student outcomes and ensure every student thrives. We are grateful to Dr. Ted Landry for his leadership during this transition."

Vinson was named as the lone finalist for CISD’s superintendent of schools in a unanimous vote during a special board meeting Aug. 27, as previously reported by Community Impact. Vinson has been the superintendent for Wylie ISD since 2011, which has over 19,300 students and 20 campuses. In comparison, CISD serves over 73,000 students across 71 campuses.

According to information from CISD, under Vinson, Wylie ISD received A's for the district and each campus as part of the TEA’s 2024-25 accountability ratings. Vinson also expanded dual-credit enrollment at WISD by 600% and grew the district’s fund balance from $9 million to more than $85 million, according to a news release.

“I am beyond excited to join this great school district and serve our students, families, educators and the broader community,” said Vinson. “I am humbled and honored that our board of trustees has chosen me to lead Conroe ISD, and I look forward to working alongside our staff to ensure every student grows in both academics and character.”

How we got here

Former Superintendent Curtis Null left the district after 25 years to take the superintendent position in Lake Travis ISD, as previously reported by Community Impact at the beginning of May. The Woodlands High School principal, Ted Landry, was named interim superintendent May 19 following a 7-0 vote and began to serve in the position June 1.

The board of trustees approved Texans for Excellence in Education as the superintendent search firm May 29 in a 5-2 vote. The Superintendent Search Plan, the search process for the district’s new superintendent, began in June with community engagement and input events throughout the district.
