What you need to know
Vinson has been the superintendent for Wylie ISD since 2011, which has over 19,300 students and 20 campuses. In comparison, CISD serves over 73,000 students across 71 campuses.
According to an Aug. 27 news release, under Vinson, Wylie ISD received A’s for the district and each individual campus as part of the TEA’s 2024-25 accountability ratings. Vinson also expanded dual-credit enrollment at Wylie ISD by 600% and grew the district’s fund balance from $9 million to more than $85 million, according to the release.
Vinson graduated from Texas Tech University, and his career in public education began in 1992 as a gifted and talented teacher and coordinator in Idalou ISD. He served in leadership roles for Frenship ISD and as the superintendent of Floresville ISD before he made his way to Wylie ISD, per the release.
What they’re saying
“I met [CISD’s school board] and ... it was just this laser focus on kids, on character and your focus on teachers and making sure we're taking care of our teachers and our community. That is vital and essential because if we have shared values, things are going to go well,” Vinson said at the meeting. “I can’t wait to learn how to Conroe.”
“Dr. Vinson not only brings a track record of achievement, but also a heart for students and families. We are confident he will build on CISD’s strengths and lead us with vision and integrity into the future,” board President Misty Odenweller said in the release.
How we got here
Superintendent Curtis Null left the district after 25 years to take the superintendent post in Lake Travis ISD, as previously reported by Community Impact at the beginning of May. The Woodlands High School principal, Ted Landry, was named interim superintendent May 19 following a 7-0 vote and began his position June 1.
"I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to serve Conroe ISD as interim superintendent. I have treasured my time at The Woodlands High School and look forward to continuing to serve the Conroe ISD community," Landry said in a statement.
CISD did not immediately respond to an inquiry regarding whether Landry had applied for the permanent role.
The board of trustees approved Texans for Excellence in Education as the superintendent search firm May 29 in a 5-2 vote. The Superintendent Search Plan, the search process for the district’s new superintendent, began in June with community engagement and input events throughout the district.
What happens next
The CISD board of trustees can officially vote to hire Vinson as CISD’s superintendent after a 21-day waiting period, according to the news release.
