Texas’ sales tax holiday will span Aug. 8-10 this year. Texas families are expected to save an estimated $133.2 million in state and local sales taxes on items such as clothing and school supplies during this year’s sales tax holiday, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office.
What to know
For three days, customers will not have to pay the standard 8.25% sales tax on select clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks under $100, including diapers and certain sanitizers. The exemption applies whether shoppers buy items in stores, online, by telephone or by mail, according to the comptroller’s office.
Items placed on layaway or final payments made on existing layaway purchases during the holiday are tax-free, provided the individual item price remains below $100, according to a news release.
“Back-to-school costs can add up fast,” Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock said in the news release.“Whether you prefer to shop in person or online, this tax-free weekend helps families stretch their hard-earned dollars, saving about $8 for every $100 spent.
Items included in the tax-free weekend include:
- Backpacks
- Shirts
- Jeans
- School supplies
