Kroger announced Feb. 28 it will close its store in the Village of Sterling Ridge in The Woodlands. Kroger has operated in Sterling Ridge for 25 years, according to a news release from the company.

The store’s final day of operation will be May 6, according to a statement from Kroger.

What's happening?

Associates employed at the store will be considered for reassignment to other Kroger locations, per the company's collective bargaining agreement, according to the news release.

The following other Kroger locations will remain open serving The Woodlands, according to the company:
  • 8000 Research Forest Drive, The Woodlands
  • 4747 Research Forest Drive, The Woodlands
  • 24350 Kuykendahl Road, Tomball
Put in perspective

In 2020, anchor grocery stores in the villages of Grogan's MIll and Panther Creek closed when Randall's announced it was closing those locations. A library and community center are now planned at the Grogan's Mill location through a collaboration between Montgomery County and Howard Hughes.

Brad Bailey, chair of The Woodlands Township board of directors, said in a statement to Community Impact the board is asking for community input on restaurant or retail businesses they would like to see in The Woodlands.

"While this is unfortunate news, we have seen this coming for some time," Bailey said of the closing. "Shopping has drastically changed since the '80s and '90s when our village shopping centers were built. It's time for us to reimagine our village shopping centers to meet the retail needs of our community today."
