A microgrant program spearheaded by The Woodlands Arts Council awarded more than $75,000 to 28 schools and nonprofits across The Woodlands and Montgomery County, according to a June 24 news release.

The details

The goal of TWAC’s Microgrant Program is to support arts initiatives at schools and local nonprofits across the region, furthering the organization’s mission, “Make Art Matter,” according to the release.

This year, TWAC’s Dr. David Gottlieb Education Microgrant funded 15 arts programs in various schools and organizations, according to the release. These include Birnham Woods Elementary School, where students could take a hands-on approach to exploring textile art, and the Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center, which offers free art therapy to people affected by cancer.

Thirteen schools also received grants through TWAC’s Performing Arts Microgrant Program, in partnership with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Moorhead Junior High School’s electric orchestra program now has access to wood electric violins, amps and wireless systems, according to the release. Similarly, all three music classrooms at Stewart Elementary School are now equipped with a full set of district-standard instruments through microgrant funding.

“It’s inspiring to meet the educators and see their dedication and enthusiasm in providing every child with the chance to experience music through these grants,” TWAC Board Director Nancy Charbonneau said in the release.

Next steps

Applications for the next cycle of the microgrant program will open in September. Potential applicants can find more information on TWAC’s website.
