The city of Sugar Land held a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 25 for its new 2026 FIFA World Cup volunteer center ahead of Houston matches this summer.
The opening comes after Sugar Land City Council approved a $2.5 million sponsorship with the Houston 2026 World Cup Host Committee in September, Community Impact reported.
The big picture
The new volunteer center, which was donated to the city by Rebees Management Company, will act as a central hub for volunteer coordination, training and engagement for activities, including:
- Volunteer recruitment, onboarding and training
- Daily briefings and shift coordination
- On-site support
- Volunteer rest and recovery space
- Public-facing visitor information and assistance
The back of the center is designed for volunteer briefings, and the front is more of a lounge and relaxation area, said Austin Pennington, Sugar Land’s graphic design/multimedia coordinator, who was responsible for the building's interior design.

By collaborating with the economic development department and other vendors, Pennington said he was able to represent FIFA and Sugar Land in the artwork.
“I think this center is an opportunity to showcase our diversity in our community because FIFA is a global event, the World Cup is a global event and so a part of what we’re doing here as well is to show we have an international spirit,” Pennington said.
Zooming out
The city of Sugar Land is set to host eight days of watch parties in Sugar Land Town Square, Community Impact reported.
In addition to watch parties, officials said the city will also host several other initiatives for exposure throughout the month of the World Cup, including:
- Two days of youth soccer clinics at Constellation Field
- Pop-up soccer events at city parks
- Space Cowboys soccer week
- Branded arrival experience at Sugar Land Regional Airport
- Events and outreach through public art contests, community surveys and FIFA programming
Other attractions, including the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land and the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, are preparing World Cup-themed programming for visitors, Brooks said.
The city also launched a planning portal Dec. 8 to give fans a resource to explore events across the city during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What’s next?
The volunteer center will operate between March 25 and July, when the World Cup concludes, Mayor Carol McCutcheon said.
Pennington said a few additions are still coming to the volunteer center, including 3D-inspired art, rugs, floor stickers and window graphics. Other additions include a selfie space and foosball tables.
