The big picture
At a Sept. 16 meeting, Sugar Land City Council unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance to increase water, surface water, wastewater and trash rates. Council previously approved the first reading at a Sept. 2 meeting.
The rates are adjusted annually based on the fluctuating consumer price index, which is a measure of the average change in prices, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Zooming in
The average household can expect to see an increase of $3.06 per month to their water utility bill, bringing the cost to $107.31, said ShaLae Steadman, director of budget for Sugar Land, at a Sept. 2 meeting. The average is based on a 10,000-gallon usage.
Meanwhile, residential trash rates will see a $2.09 per month increase, bringing their average cost to $23.97. The increase includes $1 per household toward disaster recovery due to uncertainty with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Steadman said.
Looking ahead
The fees will go into effect Jan. 1, Steadman said.
