Fort Bend County Libraries is set to launch a new library system in September following a cyberattack earlier this year.

The February cyberattack disrupted library services, leaving many services—including the online catalog, account management and access to databases like The Wall Street Journal and LinkedIn Learning—unavailable, Community Impact reported. No evidence of data compromise was found, officials previously said.

In a nutshell

The new network launch will allow users to once again access computers, Internet, printing and digital collections, library officials announced in an Aug. 13 news release.

Other infrastructure changes include:
  • Replacement servers
  • Modern network hardware and software
  • Cloud-based catalog
Additionally, library officials will roll out a new app that will allow users to access features such as catalog searches and placing holds from their own device, per the release.

“We thank you for your patience and appreciate your continued support,” Library Director Roosevelt Weeks said in the release. “We look forward to introducing everyone to our new, enhanced system.”

What else?

Overdue fines will continue to be waived until Nov. 30 for items that were checked out between Feb. 24 and Sept. 1, although items checked out beginning Sept. 2 will resume the normal check-out schedule, per the release.

Going forward

The new library system will launch Sept. 2, followed by a Re-Launch Party on Sept. 6 from 2-4 p.m. at the George Memorial Library, located at 1001 Golfview Drive, Richmond, according to the release.

The party will feature giveaways, activities and refreshments as well as the opportunity to get a limited-edition library card.
