The details
The 26-foot mobile adoption unit aims to increase animal visibility in underserved and remote areas, relieve shelter overcrowding and provide mobile health services such as microchipping and vaccinations, said Maria Alanis-Caireli, health communications coordinator and public information officer for Fort Bend County Health & Human Services.
The $217,250 climate-controlled vehicle, approved by Fort Bend County commissioners in May, can house up to 21 animals and also includes cabinets, countertops and storage.
Alanis-Caireli said the unit will be used for:
- Adoption events
- Public education
- Health services
- Emergency pet evacuation
In case you missed it
In July, Fort Bend County commissioners approved a $54,000 agreement with Shelter Planners of America, a consulting firm, to begin design on a new animal shelter and satellite animal adoption center, Community Impact reported.
The proposed new shelter is slated to be approximately 38,000 square feet, while the proposed satellite animal adoption center is approximately 8,000 square feet. Cost and sites have not been finalized.
The design process is expected to take six months upon authorization to proceed from the county, officials previously said.
Looking ahead
The mobile unit's future event dates and locations will be posted on the county’s website and shared across social media platforms.
