Four candidates have been identified for the Missouri City police chief vacancy.

What residents need to know

Residents will have the opportunity to ask the candidates questions at a community Q&A panel on Dec. 4 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Elkins High School, located at 7007 Knights Court, Missouri City, according to a Nov. 29 Facebook post from the city.

According to the post, finalists include:
  • Yasar Bashir, who serves as an assistant chief over Patrol Region 3 for the Houston Police Department
  • DeShawn Beaufort, who serves as an inspector for the Philadelphia Police Department in Pennsylvania
  • Ray Juengst, who serves as police chief for the Saint Charles Police Department in Missouri
  • David Wermes, who serves as police chief for the Wauconda Police Department in Illinois
Looking back

Missouri City officials announced in September that Chief Brandon Harris would leave the department in January after a year in the role, Community Impact reported. The chief position was previously held by Mike Berezin, who served in the role from 2014 to 2022.

Next steps

Following the Dec. 4 panel, city officials will meet with the four candidates to determine the city’s next police chief, Shauna Shepherd, human resources and civil service director for Missouri City, said in an email.

City officials aim to have an offer extended by the end of the year ahead of Harris’ departure in January, she said.
