A new mountain bike trail could come to the west end of Brazos River Park as the city extends its agreement for mountain bike trail planning and maintenance, officials said.

The overview

At a Nov. 19 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved an updated license agreement with the Fort Bend Mountain Bike Association to assist in building, maintaining and managing the city’s natural surface trails.

Fort Bend Mountain Bike Association is a nonprofit organization, under the umbrella of the International Mountain Bicycling Association, dedicated to collaborating with the city’s parks department on mountain bike trails, according to agenda documents.

The specifics

The agreement builds on the 2019 approved agreement, William Hajdik, assistant director of parks and recreation for Sugar Land, said. Updates in the 2024 agreement include:
  • Updated safety protocols
  • Updated trail maps
Additionally, the agreement proposes a future mountain 3-mile bike trail at Brazos River West End, Hajdik said.

Looking back

City Council approved the original agreement in December 2019 after resident concern about unapproved trail work, according to agenda documents.

During the last agreement period, the Fort Bend Mountain Bike Association enhanced multiple city mountain bike trails, including:
  • Brazos River Park and Oyster Creek Park mountain bike trails improvements
  • Justin P. Brindley trail improvements
  • River Park mountain bike trails reconstruction
  • Installation of connector between Brazos River Park to Memorial Park trails
  • Repairs to all mountain bike trails after Hurricane Beryl
The group has contributed over 2,140 hours in the last 12 months to maintain trails and hosting races, Hajdik said.

Looking ahead

The five-year agreement is set to last through Dec. 18, 2029 with an option for five one-year extensions, Hajdik said.
