The overview
At an Oct. 1 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a nearly $1.98 million design and construction administration with Huitt-Zollars Inc. for the Brazos River Erosion Riverstone capital improvement project.
The details
According to agenda documents, the design phase services will include a historic and cultural survey, a threatened and endangered species survey, and permit obtainment from the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers.
Huitt-Zollars Inc. will also provide construction administration services once designs are complete.
Looking back
Sugar Land officials contracted with Huitt-Zollars Inc. in 2018 to study erosion on the banks of the Brazos River, which yielded findings of 13 critical bank sites that, without interference, could wash further away and cause damage to infrastructure and homes, Community Impact reported.
Following the studies, the city received a $28 million grant from the Texas Water Development Board in January 2023 to fund the erosion repair project, Assistant City Engineer Robert Wilson said.
Next steps
Design is expected to finish in late 2025, with construction set to begin in spring 2026, Wilson said.
