Federally-required renovations to the Sugar Land Regional Airport’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection building is set to begin in October.

At a Sept. 17 meeting, Sugar Land City Council approved a $271,903 contract with CSZ Developers LLC for the U.S. Customs Renovation Project Phase 2 construction at the airport.

The project ensures the airport meets U.S. Customs and Border Protection minimum requirements, according to agenda documents.

Phase 2 of renovations will include layout improvements, with part of the lobby becoming a search room and a restroom being converted to an interview room, according to agenda documents.

Security measures, such as cameras and duress buttons, will also be added to the new rooms.

According to agenda documents, additional custom building improvements include:
  • Holding cell reinforcements
  • Installing a generator

Phase 1, which was completed in late 2021, included security systems upgrades such as badge access, adding an intrusion detection system, and installing interior and exterior cameras, according to agenda documents.
