The Fort Bend ISD board of trustees is now accepting applications from community members interested in serving as the appointed trustee for Position 5, the seat previously occupied by now-resigned Trustee Sonya Jones.

At the June 23 board meeting, board President Kristin Tassin announced the board voted to begin an application process to select a new trustee, who will serve until May 2026 and may choose to run for election to continue in the role, according to a June 24 news release.

“I believe the community needs a full board with seven trustees, but rather than simply picking a trustee, it's important for members of the district's community to let us know if they're interested in serving on the board before we determine who to appoint,” Tassin said at the meeting.

The background

Jones, who was elected to the Fort Bend ISD board in May 2023, officially resigned at the May 19 board meeting, although public comments and deleted social media posts suggest she announced her departure over a month earlier.

Despite the resignation being final, Jones has continued to serve and vote as a trustee, which Tassin said is permitted under Texas law until a successor is appointed.

Who’s eligible

According to release, applicants must meet several legal qualifications, including:
  • Be a U.S. citizen

  • Not be declared mentally incapacitated by court judgment

Trustees are not compensated as volunteers and typically meet two evenings per month, with additional specially-called meetings as needed, per the website.
