“The board is thankful for trustee Jones’ service to the district, and we wish her well in her future plans,” board President Kristin Tassin said in the release.
The details
During the public comment portion of the June 9 agenda review meeting, multiple speakers said Jones announced her resignation in a now-deleted Facebook post over a month ago, followed by a district send-off invitation—which was also later deleted.
"She submitted her resignation in writing,” former trustee Kristen Malone said during public comment. "The district prepared a public send-off. It was shared broadly, ... but it’s now more than a month later, she remains seated, voting and representing this community."
Community Impact was not able to verify the now-deleted Facebook post or the send-off invitation that included Jones. Additionally, Community Impact reached out to Jones but did not receive a comment before press time.
According to the release, Jones’ resignation is final, and there was no need for the board to take any action to accept her resignation.
However, Tassin said under Texas law, Jones can continue to act as a trustee until her successor is appointed.
Looking back
Since being elected to the position, Jones voted in support of a number of policies, some of which were divisive among board members and parents, including:
- A voter-approval tax rate election, known as a VATRE, for a four-cent tax increase during the 2023-24 fiscal year to allow teacher and staff pay raises
- An audit of 2023 bond projects, which revealed the projected shortfall was due to the failure of accounting for inflation in the cost estimates
- Reversal of class ranking policies grouping graduating students based on their home address campus opposed to the campus they attend
- A policy granting the superintendent the ability to ban library books deemed inappropriate or vulgar
- Inclusion of the Bluebonnet Curriculum within the district’s 2025 instructional audit
- Gender identity policy mandating staff inform parents if their student requests to use pronouns inconsistent with their birth-assigned sex
After the recent May 3 elections, two new trustees were appointed to the board, Community Impact reported.
Angie Wierzbicki defeated incumbent trustee Rick Garcia, while Afshi Charania was elected into the seat of former trustee David Hamilton, who did not run for re-election.
Next steps
At the June 23 board meeting, the board will begin the process of selecting a replacement for Jones, according to the release.
