Officials with Bonsai Hibachi and Sushi celebrated the May opening of their new location in Sugar Land.

The overview

Co-owner and chef Vitcha Janthrakat said the restaurant offers a variety of hibachi and sushi options as well as a selection of dishes featuring halal meats. He said he chose Sugar Land as the business’ second location because of the lack of Japanese steakhouse options in the area.

The backstory

Janthrakat, who started his journey in Japanese cuisine 20 years ago working at a sushi bar in Ohio, said the new location is coming roughly 17 years after the opening of his first restaurant, Bonsai Fusion Japanese Steakhouse, in Copperfield in 2007.

Janthrakat noted business was steady at Bonsai Fusion Japanese Steakhouse until the COVID-19 pandemic halted in-person business in early 2020.

“To adapt, we introduced special to-go options, making our food more affordable and ensuring customers could enjoy the same restaurant-quality experience at home,” Janthrakat said. “As social media gained traction, word about our halal meat offerings spread widely, greatly enhancing our visibility.”

The details

Janthrakat said some of the most popular items featured at Bonsai Hibachi and Sushi's menu include:
  • Rib-eye steak
  • Filet mignon
  • Spicy Philly cheese steak roll
  • Super crunchy roll
  • Japanese fried rice
  • Yaki udon noodles
What's next

Looking to the future, Janthrakat said he hopes to expand the restaurant to more locations in the Greater Houston area and potentially Dallas.
