The Fort Bend County Commissioners Court focused on an initiative at a June 27 meeting to create an emergency traffic and transportation monitoring system.

The construction of the emergency monitoring system was brought back into focus after Fort Bend County Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy reminded county representatives this was a major recent initiative of the county judge’s office.

What’s happening

“We’re trying to set up some new cameras at key intersections, primarily along the evacuation routes and other major corridors around the county, and tie the cameras back into the transportation facility. This would allow us to monitor the traffic conditions during emergency events,” County Engineer Stacy Slawinski said.

However, Slawinski could not yet clarify the anticipated completion date for Phase 1 of the emergency flood camera project, as the new camera system requires the acquisition of parcels of right of way the county is working to attain.

The recorded information would be shared with the county to help monitor and manage evacuation routes and other vital traffic areas, such as major highways.

Also on the agenda

Officials also approved two motions at the June 27 meeting that will benefit transportation programs by providing grants from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The county approved the first grant application for fiscal year 2023-24 under Section 5311 Rural State Funds. The requested amount was $353,320, with no local match required.

In the secondary application, county officials approved ratification for an application submitted in the previous year. The application was made for FY 2022-23 under the same Section 5311 Rural Federal Funds category, amounting to $454,135. A proposed state match of $294,144 was included, which would be provided through fiscal year 2023-24.

According to county officials, both grants aim to secure grants for public transportation initiatives in Fort Bend County that will be expanded upon in the near future. These grants may potentially be applied to programs such as the emergency network monitoring system.
