Bernardo Pitel Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a training facility offering authentic instruction under the guidance of world-renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Bernardo Pitel, is celebrating its first year of business in Missouri City.

“It’s been a great year of meeting people who haven’t just become students but really close friends," owner and coach Karen Hernandez said in an email. "Jiu jitsu isn’t just for sport—it’s an amazingly beautiful way of life. We truly believe everyone can immensely benefit mentally as much as physically if they make jiu jitsu part of their everyday life."

The academy, located in a 2,400-square-foot facility, features over 1,000 square feet of mat space, changing rooms, showers and a seated viewing area, per its website.

The gist

According to its website, the academy offers classes tailored for both beginners and advanced students, with adult programs including:
  • Gi classes, which utilize the traditional uniform—called a gi or kimono—and focus on techniques such as grips, positional control and submissions
  • NoGi classes, which are conducted without the gi, are ideal for those interested in mixed martial arts, self-defense or refining their grappling skills in a faster-paced environment
Meanwhile, the Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program matches children ages 3 to 17 by age, size and experience to ensure a safe and encouraging environment with classes including:
  • Tiny Grapplers for ages 3-5, which is a 45-minute playful, engaging class that introduces basic movements
  • Juniors for ages 6-12, which is a one-hour session with sparring, technique and strategy development
  • Teens for ages 13-17, which is structured like adult classes, with a full curriculum and peer motivation
Private lessons are also available for students who prefer a personalized approach or want to accelerate their progress alongside group classes, per the website.

In addition to his competitive career, Pitel holds a degree in physical education from Universidade Católica de Brasília and has spent years developing a coaching style that emphasizes physical skill, mental toughness and personal growth, per the website.
