Just five weeks after opening her Missouri City restaurant, chef and entrepreneur Keyana Wiley was forced to close the doors to Key 2 the Sea—not by choice, but by circumstances beyond her control.

She said that while her clientele was "devastated" by the closure, she has received support that encourages her to find another location in Missouri City.

“People were very supportive ... they were just like, wherever you go, we will follow,” she said. “I really want to stay in Missouri City—I kind of built my clientele there [and] built good friendships.”

The backstory

About a year and a half after relocating from Chicago to Missouri City, Wiley opened her restaurant, Key 2 the Sea, inside the Harvest Market in early April. The eatery offered fried seafood baskets, po’ boys, pastas and seafood boils, similar to those she served at her previous North Chicago location.

But by May 10, she said her dream was abruptly put on hold when she was given three weeks to leave the location.

“We were just told that [the owners] just can't afford to keep the building open and that they needed to shut the building down,” she said.

Community Impact reached out to Harvest Market’s management but a response was not received by press time.

Sienna Wings was also located within Harvest Market, although they have since relocated across the street, a restaurant representative confirmed.

Looking ahead

In the meantime, Wiley said she will continue to serve her food on a limited basis, taking orders through social media while she cooks and travels back-and-forth from the Houston area and Chicago. The orders will include the same menu items from the restaurant.
