A two-part project to expand the Grand Parkway from four lanes to six lanes and complete other renovations kicked off on June 2, according to an Aug. 20 email from Bambi Hall, a public information officer with the Texas Department of Transportation.

What’s happening?

Construction is underway on the first part of the project—a $65.3 million effort to revamp the Grand Parkway’s Segment F-2 between Hwy. 249 and Kuykendahl Road—according to the email. Workers have so far focused on temporarily moving travel lanes to create a work zone.

“The ongoing work required to transition the travel lanes to the temporary alignment may cause traffic delays,” Hall said. “TxDOT appreciates the patience of the motoring public and reminds everyone to please drive with caution through work zones and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.”

Work for this portion of the project is expected to take about three years, Hall said. Although it began on time, construction was temporarily paused when Hurricane Beryl swept through the Greater Houston area on July 8.

What’s next?

The second $45.94 million portion of Segment F-2 is scheduled to go out for construction bids on Sept. 1, 2027, according to TxDOT’s email. That portion runs from Kuykendahl Road to Holzwarth Road, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Other renovations that will be completed throughout both portions of the project include replacing the roadway’s grassy median with a concrete barrier.

The background

A nearly 50% increase in traffic was counted on the Grand Parkway since the Greater Houston area’s outermost loop extended across North Houston in 2016, as previously reported by Community Impact.

“Traffic volumes and current/future development have made these widening projects necessary to accommodate current/projected growth in the area,” Hall said.

The Segment F-2 Grand Parkway expansions are being funded by TxDOT, as previously reported by Community Impact.
