How does your experience qualify you to be a member of the Spring ISD board of trustees?

I have served on the Spring ISD board since November 2006. Over the past 10 years I have served in many roles on the board including president, vice president and assistant secretary. I bring to the position 20 years of experience as a volunteer in the Spring community, as a dedicated board member, PTO president who launched both Claughton Middle School and Wunsche High School PTOs, a former Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader, and through years of community service as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. In addition, my educational background with a degree in management and accounting uniquely qualifies me for the leadership and fiscal responsibilities required as a member of the board of trustees.

What do you believe are the main issues facing the district? What will you do to help it address its needs?

Changing demographics in the Spring community have brought new challenges we must address to ensure our students receive a rigorous, high quality education. By embracing the diversity and the opportunities that brings, we must also address increased mobility rates, a diverse group of students and special education challenges. Governing with a focus on literacy, teacher retention, safety, early childhood learning and college readiness will be key to address these new challenges.

How does your experience qualify you to be a member of the Spring ISD board of trustees?

As an educator, my training and work experience qualifies me to be a member of the board. The Educational Administration program at Texas Southern University equipped me with the knowledge and skills to lead change. My experience with school [and] community relationships, educational law and program evaluation are reflective of my training. My involvement on campus and district improvement teams and committees has contributed to my knowledge base and has improved my overall performance as an educational leader. These experiences required translation and understanding of the Texas Education Code, continuity and relevance between the student code of conduct, employee and parent handbooks, and local board policies.

What do you believe are the main issues facing the district? What will you do to help it address its needs?

The main issues facing the Spring ISD community are student discipline and student performance. As a trustee, I will work with the superintendent in identifying the community’s needs and approving policies that require training for campus administrators and district coordinators. I will assist by identifying areas in need of improvement and suggestions for research-based programs and professionals in the field.
