A portion of the Collins Park trail will close beginning Jan. 2 for approximately six to eight months, Harris County Precinct 4 announced in a press release Dec. 20.

According to the release, the temporary closure is necessary while the Harris County Flood Control District begins construction on a $3.5 million bank stabilization project along Cypress Creek. The project will include repairing the eroded bank, reinforcing the bank with riprap stone and removing exposed pipelines. For more information about the project, click here.

The trail segment that will be inaccessible during construction runs from the parking lot near the picnic area to the entrance of the off-road mountain bike trails. In the interim, visitors will be able to use the Gourley Trail, which runs between Collins and Meyer parks, as well as the off-road mountain bike trail on the east side of the park, the release states. The park road may also be used as a detour.

Collins Park is located at 6727 Cypresswood Drive, Spring, and features five softball fields, four baseball fields, one soccer field, one sand volleyball court, two playgrounds, a skate park and a canoe launch. In addition to nature trails, the 55-acre park also includes picnic tables, barbecue grills, a restroom and limited access to fishing along Cypress Creek. 281-353-8100. www.hcp.net/parks/collins
