PREVIEW: Harris County to consider $20M Reliant Center roof replacement, infrastructure committee

Harris County commissioners will discuss the official creation of a committee dedicated to streamlining county infrastructure programs, along with considering the approval of $20 million for renovation of county facilities at the Reliant Center.

The breakdown

Commissioners are set to hold a business court meeting June 25, where they will reconsider the creation of the Infrastructure Coordination and Performance Committee. County Administrator Erica Lee Carter presented the committee's structure and scope during the June 11 meeting, stating it will focus on creating standardized processes and procedures for infrastructure-related projects across all county departments.

According to agenda documents, the committee would also keep track and create standardized reports for multiple infrastructure initiatives that have been operating under their own committees, including:

• Downtown Master Plan
• Vision Zero workgroup
• Transportation Master Plan
• Hardy Connector committee
• 2018 Flood Bond workgroup
• Subdivision Drainage workgroup
• Infrastructure Goal Area Committee
• Harris County Community Flood Resilience Task Force

Carter also outlined a chief infrastructure officer role, which would co-chair the committee and provide day-to-day administration. Commissioners requested that Carter bring additional information before the court June 25 to allow for time for other county departments to weigh in on the new committee.

On the agenda, commissioners will consider officially appointing the chief infrastructure officer. According to county documents, Harris County Toll Road Authority Director Roberto Trevino will be recommended for the position.

What else?

Commissioners will also consider roughly $20 million in renovations to county facilities at the Reliant Center in Downtown Houston. The repairs include:

• $12 million for Reliant Center roof replacement
• $8 million for central plant repairs

The Reliant Center roof replacement will include a full replacement of the stadium roof as well as repairs to any concealed damage due to storms, weathering and use.
