Harris County Precinct 3 officials celebrated the opening of a new inclusive playground and three pickleball courts at Meyer Park during a Feb. 5 ribbon-cutting ceremony.

How we got here

These projects came about following the Precinct 3 Parks and Trails Master Plan was released in August 2023. The plan entailed recommendations for existing and future parks and trails, including input from residents.

The inclusive playground caters to children with special needs, and the pickleball courts were a response to the sport's growing popularity, officials said. Precinct 3 will soon be home to 12 total pickleball courts upon the completion of ongoing construction projects at I.T. May Park in Huffman and Russ Poppe Family Park in Cypress, according to a news release.

An 8,650-square-foot playground features equipment for learning and playing, including an electric piano panel, chimes, a miniature truck and a playhouse. Additionally, a communication board donated by The Channing’s Joy Foundation fosters expression through visual symbols and words, the release states.

Quote of note

“Improvements like the inclusive playground and pickleball courts serve as prime examples of taking residents’ input from our Precinct 3 Parks and Trails Master Plan and turning that information into actual projects for better outdoor amenities,” Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey said in the release. “And because we have the largest parks and trails system in Harris County, this remains one of our top priorities.”
