Officials with Yes Prep Public Schools celebrated the grand opening of the new North Rankin Elementary School with a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 12. Officials first broke ground on the campus in July 2023.

Who it's for

During its inaugural school year, the campus will serve students in pre-K through second grade, and add one grade level each subsequent school year until it becomes a pre-K through fifth grade campus.

What parents should know

All Yes Prep schools are tuition-free with no admission requirements; students are accepted through a lottery system, which opened in February.

According to an Aug. 8 news release, all Yes Prep schools provide:
  • Free meals
  • Electronic devices
  • Transportation
  • Access to health care, mental health and other student support services
Yes Prep elementary schools offer a curriculum that focus on reading; writing; and science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. The schools also offer special education programs and bilingual education.

Yes Prep elementary students also receive automatic enrollment in Yes Prep secondary schools. As of the Aug. 8 news release, seats were still available for the 2024-25 school year.

Some context

North Rankin Elementary is one of three elementary schools the charter school system is opening for the 2024-25 school year. Per the release, all Yes Prep schools are located in "very low" opportunity areas, per the Child Opportunity Index. The new North Rankin Elementary is in an area with 0% pre-K enrollment and a "very low" high school graduation rate, per the release.

"The three new schools are in predominately Hispanic and Black neighborhoods that have historically not had the access to high quality education," the release reads.
