A new pre-K class for 3-year-old students will be tested at three Spring ISD schools during the upcoming 2024-25 school year, distirct officials announced in an Aug. 5 news release.

About the program

SISD’s new pre-K 3 program is being piloted at Lewis, McNabb and Winship elementary schools, according to the release. SISD students begin the 2024-25 school year on Aug. 14.

According to the release, the new program’s curriculum, “Frog Street 3,” focuses on:
  • Play and exploration
  • Activities to build vocabulary and develop oral language skills
How it works

On June 6, SISD leaders presented information on the pre-K 3 pilot program to the district’s board of trustees. Each campus piloting the pre-K 3 program will have a blended pre-K 3 and pre-K 4 class with one teacher and one aide.

According to the presentation, the pre-K 3 pilot program will also:
  • Have about three to six students in each pre-K 3 class
  • Be taught in the same classroom as a pre-K 4 class but with a different level of curriculum and in a separate small-group instruction
What they're saying

On June 6, SISD received more than 100 applications for the new pre-K 3 pilot program, district officials said.

“I think in our community, we've got pockets of ... food deserts and child care deserts, so I would imagine there's a great demand for it,” SISD board President Justine Durant said June 6. “That's why I just want to make sure that we give it all we have.”

Enrollment capacity for the new program has already been reached, according to the release.

“I was super excited; I jumped on [the chance] right as soon as it popped up, and so did all my friends,” said SISD parent Alyssa McCool, whose son is enrolled in the pre-K 3 program.

What's next

District officials noted the program could be expanded to other campuses in the future.
