Klein ISD school board members have approved to extend school days by up to 15 minutes for the upcoming 2020-21 school year in a special meeting June 12.

According to a KISD news release, the increased time of instruction allows for additional academic support to students and considers potential school closures in the future due to the coronavirus pandemic or bad weather days.

While the first day of instruction is still scheduled to take place Wednesday, Aug. 19, instruction time has increased by 15 minutes for elementary students, by 10 minutes for intermediate students and by 11 minutes for high school students, according to the previous version of the 2020-21 Klein ISD academic school year calendar. All other dates in the previously approved calendar will also remain in effect.

The decision comes after the district received over 20,000 responses to an online survey released earlier this month and closed June 9 at 5 p.m.

The new times for school days in the 2020-21 school year are as follows.

  • Elementary schools: 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

  • Intermediate schools: 8:50 a.m.-4:20 p.m.

  • High schools: 7:15 a.m.-2:46 p.m.
