A little more than 6% of the total workforce living within the nine ZIP codes that make up Community Impact Newspaper’s Spring-Klein coverage area filed for unemployment insurance within a one-month period, according to May 26 Texas Workforce Commission data—down from the nearly 7% of the local workforce that filed for unemployment between April 8-May 9.

Between April 15-May 16, 12,302 Spring and Klein residents filed for unemployment insurance. ZIP code 77068 continues to have the fewest claimants, with 440, while ZIP code 77373 continues to have the most, with 2,189.

By comparison, in that same time period, Harris County had 136,395 unemployment claimants, or about 5.67% of the county’s total workforce of 2.41 million.

This is down from nearly 9% of the local workforce that filed for unemployment between March 25-April 25.

Between April 8-May 9, 13,957 Spring and Klein residents filed for unemployment insurance. ZIP code 77068 had the least claimants with 480, while ZIP code 77373 had the most with 2,458 claimants.

By comparison, in that same time period, Harris County had 153,723 unemployment claims, or about 6.39% of the county's total workforce of 2.41 million.

Nearly 9% of the total workforce that live within the nine ZIP codes that make up Community Impact Newspaper's Spring-Klein coverage area filed for unemployment insurance within a one-month period, according to Texas Workforce Commission data.

Between March 25-April 25, 18,026 Spring and Klein residents filed for unemployment insurance. Of those claimants, 13,625 were eligible to receive benefits, while 4,401 were not. Additionally, 9,977 claimants were women, and 8,049 were men.


ZIP code 77068 had the least claimants, with 600, and ZIP code 77379 had the most, with 3,237 claimants.

By comparison, in that same month, Harris County had 196,685 total unemployment claims, or about 8.17% of the county's total workforce of 2,406,512. According to TWC's data, the top five industries that account for Harris County claims include full-service restaurants, temporary help services, dentists' offices, department stores and limited-service restaurants.

More than 18,000 residents who live within the nine ZIP codes that make up Community Impact Newspaper's Spring and Klein coverage area filed for unemployment insurance between March 18-April 18, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission.

The commission released a new interactive mapping tool in late April, which breaks down unemployment insurance claims at the ZIP code level. According to the data, 18,638 unemployment insurance claimants reside within the Spring and Klein area, accounting for approximately 4.69% of the area's total population. By comparison, during that same time period Harris County had 203,744 unemployment insurance claimants, which accounts for roughly 4.32% of the county's total population of 4,714,391.

Of the total number of claimants, 8,055 are men, and 10,583 are women. Additionally, 14,451 claimants were considered monetarily eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits, while 4,187 were considered not monetarily eligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits.


According to the data, ZIP code 77379 had the most claimants, with 3,350 residents filing for benefits. ZIP code 77090 had the highest percentage of claimants compared with its total population at 8.68%. Similarly, ZIP code 77068 had the least number of claimants with 610 people filing for benefits, while ZIP code 77389 had the lowest percentage of claimants compared with its total population at 3.21%.
