For nearly half a century, Sound Revolution has been more than just a record store; it has been a gathering place for generations of music lovers.

Founded by Sunne Walton’s mother in 1976, the local record store is now carried on by Walton and her fiance Scott Waldrum, who expanded the family legacy with a second location in Spring in 2018.

What's special about it?

Walton spent her teenage years shuffling through records and stocking inventory under her mother's guidance at Sound Revolution. At the time, Walton said she had no idea she would someday be the backbone of the business.

Waldrum said he came in as co-owner in August to operate the Spring location while Walton focused on operating the location in Cypress.

Today, the record store has expanded to offer more than records and cassette tapes. At Sound Revolution, customers can also find CDs, record players, Walkmans, band T-shirts, posters, accessories and skateboards.

Walton said most recently she has seen younger generations return to the use of older media and navigate through classics their parents listened to.

“Owning physical media is coming back. People want to be able to look at a record, look at the artwork, open it up, read about it and educate themselves on what they're listening to instead of just clicking a button,” Waldrum said.

What else?

Walton said Sound Revolution carries around 2,500 new records and 400 used records at a time. The record store gets new orders weekly with modern records from Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift to classics such as Nirvana, Radiohead and The Beatles.

To continue the record store's legacy, Walton and Waldrum said they have started hosting listening parties at the Spring location and often hold live music events. The last listening party featuring the new Twenty One Pilots album generated over 100 guests.

In the near future, the couple said they have plans to host a Halloween-themed listening party. Anyone interested in attending can follow their social media updates on Facebook and Instagram.
