What began as a young girl's love for dance and self-expression has blossomed into a decades-long legacy at Vicki Michelle Dance Studio.

Founded in 1994 when Vicki Michelle Kottwitz was in her early 20s, the studio was built from the ground up with the help of her family and a vision rooted in creativity, discipline and by her mother’s gentle encouragement.

“I grew up dancing and twirling, and I think that every child can be a dancer,” Kottwitz said.

How it started

By the age of 21, Kottwitz earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and marketing, following in her parents’ footsteps.

At 23, she met an aerobic business owner who was looking for someone to take over her lease at Louetta Road and Champions Forest Drive. When Kottwitz heard of the opportunity, she envisioned the business opportunities she could begin.

Ultimately, Kottwitz started her own dance studio to teach others a life skill that promotes physical movement and confidence.

“I just think [dance] is in our nature as human beings. We hear music, and already your foot is tapping,” Kottwitz said. “There's just something about the way that God uniquely made us that gives us a desire for music.”

In 1999, Vicki Michelle Dance Studio relocated to expand into a larger space on Stuebner Airline Road.

How it’s going

Today, more than 31 years later, Kottwitz continues to share her passion for dance alongside her daughters, Morgan Lunsford and Kayli Webber, with classes for students as young as two.

Through dance, Vicki Michelle Dance Studio promotes community engagement through collaborations with local dance studios, including the American Academy of Dance, and offers a dance rehearsal space to local schools.

In addition, Vicki Michelle Dance Studio performs at local retirement homes annually and holds events for young dancers, such as kids’ tea parties, sleepovers and camps.

Their next collaboration plans include a joint venture with Magnify Dance. Taking place on Nov. 21-22, the two dance studios will perform “The Nutcracker.” Tickets will be available on Oct. 1 on the studios website.
