The communities south of Houston, which had not seen snow in over four years, received nearly three inches of snow overnight on Jan. 21, causing road closures and triggering advisories for residents to avoid driving.

The conditions

Communities southeast of Houston, including Pearland, Friendswood and Manvel, received nearly four inches of snow, according to National Weather Service reports.

CenterPoint Energy’s outage tracker showed no major power outages in the area.

“As predicted, Winter Storm Enzo hit our area last night, bringing bitter cold temperatures and blanketing much of it with snow and freezing precipitation,” CenterPoint Energy posted to its website. “While we experienced a few isolated issues, our system overall remained steady.”

Manvel Mayor Dan Davis said there were four specific addresses in Manvel that didn’t have power on the morning of Jan. 21 and were being worked on.

Measuring the impact

Friendswood, Manvel and Pearland reported no major infrastructure damage occurred as a result of the weather, but all cities advised residents to avoid driving on the roads.

A few vehicles have been stuck in the snow in Manvel, and one accident was reported, Davis said.

Pearland placed barricades on several bridges throughout town, according to the city's social media posts. Those include:
  • Bailey Road Bridge
  • Magnolia Parkway Bridge
  • McHard Road Bridge
  • North Pearland Parkway Bridge at Clear Creek
Up to this point, traffic in Pearland has been light, Pearland Director of Communications Josh Lee said. But weather forecasts call for the temperature to dip lower into Jan. 22, possibly causing the water on the roads to freeze, which could be hazardous, Lee said.

"We want people to enjoy this snow but at home, safely, and not on the road," Lee said.

In Manvel, no roads are shut down as of Jan. 21 but the city is monitoring the conditions and preparing for temperatures to dip back below freezing going into the evening of Jan. 21 through Jan. 22, Davis said.

Friendswood does not currently have any road closures, Communications Director Glenda Faulkner said. The Texas Department of Transportation and the city treated the city’s bridges with sand overnight.

What you need to know

Warming shelters and cold weather shelters are available throughout Brazoria County, according to the city's social media pages. Those include:
  • The Church on MastersRoad, 6911 Masters Road, Manvel
  • J.D. Walker Community Center, 7613 Wade Road, Baytown
  • Salvation Army, 1618 N. J St., Freeport
  • Doris Williams Lake Jackson Civic Center, 333 Hwy. 332, Lake Jackson
  • First Presbyterian Church Angleton, 130 S. Arcola St., Angleton
What else?

Pearland will pause its trash services until Jan. 24, and the next recycling pickup day will be on Jan. 28, according to a social media post.

Friendswood trash services were canceled for Jan. 21, but the city has not received confirmation on trash service for Jan. 22, Faulkner said.

One more thing

The Manvel City Council meeting scheduled for Jan. 21 was canceled, according to the city's website. Davis said all items on the agenda will be rolled into the City Council meeting on Feb. 18.
