Friendswood City Council at its Aug. 5 meeting will discuss its budget and consider employee benefits for fiscal year 2024-25.

In other business, council will also consider waiving various building permit fees for structures damaged by Hurricane Beryl, according to the agenda.

The overview

City Council at the Aug. 5 meeting will discuss a presentation on the upcoming budget and consider setting a date for a public hearing on it, according to the agenda. The date to be voted on is Aug. 26.

To pair with the budget, council will also discuss the potential property tax rate, which will include reviewing appraisal rolls from both Galveston and Harris counties, the agenda shows. It will also consider setting Sept. 9 as the date for the public hearing of the rate.

Friendswood officials began discussing the city’s budget in June, with the initial presentation suggesting the city could raise its tax rate. Meanwhile, officials expected revenue and expenses to come in at $41.2 million, suggesting a balanced budget.

Historically, the city has adopted a no-new-revenue tax rate, officials said in June.

What else?

City Council will consider an ordinance to waive building permit fees “in an effort to combat the severe economic and social disruption caused by Hurricane Beryl,” the ordinance reads. The following permit fees would be waived through the rest of the year:
  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Mechanical
  • Gas
  • Building permits
If approved, they would join a number of other surrounding communities that have taken similar actions following Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall in the Greater Houston area on July 8.
