What you need to know
Future Manvel will be a year-long, community-led initiative to plan the city’s future, including creating its first strategic plan, according to a March 21 news release from the city.
This city’s decision to pursue creating its first strategic plan follows the rapid population growth the city has experienced since 2010.
Community Impact previously reported that the city had seen a 137.7% population growth in the past decade. In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey data showed a population of 11,432 in 2020 versus 4,810 in 2010.
Diving in deeper
Future Manvel aims to closely involve the community in developing the city’s future strategic, comprehensive and thoroughfare plans, which outline the direction for land use, transportation, infrastructure and economic development.
The Future Manvel initiative is broken up into two phases, Manvel Today and Future Manvel:
During the Manvel Today phase, which will run through June 2024, the city will host open-to-the-public workshops, a city-wide public forum, focus groups and a citizen survey for residents to express their concerns and desires for the city
During the Future Manvel phase, which will run from June to December 2024, the city will host open houses on the draft plans before they move forward to formal public hearings in early 2025
The Future Manvel portion will focus on the strategic, comprehensive and thoroughfare plans to further define community goals for land-use, zoning and transportation.
Get involved
In April, the city will host one-hour sessions for community members at Manvel City Hall to share their initial thoughts and concerns. Each session is limited to 15 attendees, so interested parties can register on the city’s website.
The dates of those sessions are:
- April 2; 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; 4 to 5 p.m.; 6 to 7 p.m.
- April 3; 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.; 12 to 1 p.m.; 6 to 7 p.m.
- April 4; 10 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; 6 to 7 p.m.
"At the heart of the Future Manvel initiative is a commitment to transparency and proactive community engagement," Mayor Dan Davis said in a March 21 news release. “We recognize that the success of our city's future depends on the active participation of our residents, businesses, and stakeholders."
One more thing
The city will host a public forum on Manvel’s Future on April 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Church of Harvest, 7505 Wilson Dr., Manvel.
