With 10 of 24 precincts reporting election day results, Jeffrey Barry has taken an early lead over Alex Kamkar in the Republican primary runoff election for Texas House District 29.

What you need to know

As of 7 p.m., Barry is leading with 3,920 votes, or 59.7% of the total, to Kamkar's 2,646 votes, or 40.3% of the total, according to unofficial election results from Brazoria County.

The pair are running for District 29, which covers much of the eastern part of Brazoria County including Pearland, Manvel, Alvin and stretches down as far as Freeport, according to state maps.

Meet the candidates

In a Q&A submitted to Community Impact in February, Kamkar said if he’s elected, he will support Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for more resources for enhanced border security and look to permanently cut property taxes.

Barry said if he’s elected, he'll support first responders, prioritize securing the border, reducing property taxes and securing water sources for future generations.

How we got here

Barry and Kamkar were the top vote-getters in March when the pair ran against Edgar Pacheco, who received close to 5% of the vote. Trent Perez, who received about 3% of the vote, was on the ballot as well, but announced in December he was dropping out.

However, since none of the candidates received more than 50% of the total vote, a runoff election was triggered.

The seat was opened up after incumbent Ed Thompson announced last year he was retiring following the end of his term.

The winner of the race will represent the Republican party in November and face Democratic candidate Adrienne Bell, who ran unopposed in her party.
