Friendswood ISD is planning for a 1% teacher salary increase for the 2025-26 school year, which would cause the district’s projected shortfall to increase by nearly $677,000, bringing the new projected shortfall to over $2.2 million.

An updated budget projection was presented by FISD’s Chief Financial Officer Amber Petree and the board of trustees’ April 14 meeting.

What you need to know

The new projected budgeted amount for salaries with a 1% increase is over $52.8 million. This is an increase of nearly $830,000 since the 2025-26 budget was discussed at the board of trustees’ March 10 meeting.

At the March 10 meeting, a salary increase was not included in the projected budget, which made salary spending total over $52 million, according to budget documents.

If FISD officials opt to not do a 1% teacher salary increase, the district would be looking at a $1.56 million shortfall, budget documents show.

Also of note

The updated budget projection shows about a $200,000 increase in revenues compared to the March projection, bringing the new total revenue amount to nearly $62 million. However, the over $880,000 increase in expenses compared to the March presentation has widened the gap between revenues and expenses.
By the numbers

Currently, FISD is in the lower ranks of teacher salaries compared to surrounding districts, such as Alvin, Clear Creek and Pearland ISDs, according to salary documents.
With a 1% increase, FISD would still be within the lower ranks if all surrounding districts opt to also include a salary increase in next year’s budget.

FISD officials will continue to discuss budget projections.

The budget must be approved by the board of trustees by Aug. 31, according to district documents.
