What you need to know
The board of trustees will consider a contract with Harris County contractor AAR Incorporated for a demolition contract totaling nearly $200,000, district agenda documents note.
While district agenda documents note that the former school site ”must be demolished” to prepare for the Walt Disney Elementary replacement campus, a demolition of the site can only occur with the board’s approval, officials said.
The details
The replacement campus is a part of the district’s $380.1 million 2024 bond that passed in November, as previously reported by Community Impact.
The campus will be a combination school of Walt Disney Elementary and Stevenson Primary, according to bond documents.
Bond documents also note the replacement campus is slated to begin construction in October 2026 and open in August 2028.
How we got here
While a replacement campus was already a part of the $380.1 million bond, the decision to potentially demolish Walt Disney Elementary was sped up after an EF-2 tornado caused substantial damage to the site in late December, as previously reported by Community Impact.
As district officials waited for insurance assessments to determine if the former school site should be demolished, all 449 Walt Disney Elementary students were moved to the former Alvin Elementary school site, located at 1910 Rosharon Road, Alvin, by the time winter break ended in early January.
Students have since remained at the former Alvin Elementary school site. There is currently no timeline as to how long students will be at this location.
