Pearland ISD’s board of trustees approved a list of new personnel to meet growing needs within the district.

Two-minute impact

Citing increased prekindergarten numbers at Challenger Elementary and changing transportation needs, PISD’s board approved eight new positions at its Sept. 19 meeting.

The new positions, according to district documents, include:
  • 2 prekindergarten classroom aides
  • 5 bus drivers
  • 1 assistant director of food services
The total cost of these eight positions is expected to come in at a little less than $290,000, according to district documents.

Also of note

In the same meeting, the district’s board voted to amend its contract with the city of Pearland to add one school resource officer sergeant and 10 rotating police officers to the district’s schools, according to district documents.

The sergeant will be the 12th brought into the district, with their responsibilities including managing and scheduling off-duty police officers that will service all elementary and middle school campuses.

The decision to bring on a new sergeant follows the board’s approval of a good cause exception to the state’s new House Bill 3, which requires armed security officers to be at campuses across Texas during school hours.

Citing a lack of funding and available staff, PISD trustees approved the exception, which gives them more time to comply with the law but also requires a temporary safety plan to be in place.
