Maya Shankar, Turner College and Career High School sophomore in Pearland ISD, was selected to participate in the national EngineerGirl Ambassador program.

The program is part of the National Academy of Engineering and is focused on putting a spotlight on up-and-coming girls and women in the industry. An ambassador will design and develop a project in her community to encourage others and gain practical experience in engineering.

“This ambassador program would be a perfect opportunity for me to introduce engineering to young girls and encourage them to join robotics club by using my own story as an example,” Shankar said in a PISD press release.

According to the release, Shankar’s project will invite Girls Scouts to visit PISD’s Pearadox Facility to learn about science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, concepts. Shankar said she hopes to address a gender gap in the STEM industry with her work.

“This program would help me connect with my community girls and eventually help me grow personally confident to be an advocate for girls,” Shankar said.
