As the population within Alvin ISD’s boundaries continues to grow, so does the number of schools.

Stantec Architects during the May 10 Alvin ISD regular board meeting gave a schematic design presentation of Barbara Bennett Elementary School, which is aiming to hold its first semester of classes in fall 2024.

“We all know in this area between Hwy. 6 and Hwy. 288, there’s not a lot out there a few years ago, and there is a lot out there now, and there is a lot more coming,” said Mark Jackson, senior project manager at Stantec Architects.

The school, which will be located just north of Meridiana Parkway on Inspiration Way, draws a lot of its design from EC Mason Elementary School with some adjustments, Jackson said. The two-story building will house children from prekindergarten to fifth grade.

The first floor is planned to include four prekindergarten rooms, six kindergarten rooms, six first-grade classrooms, a gym, a clinic and an art room. The second floor is expected to have six classrooms for each grade level from second through fifth grade, science labs, and gifted and talented classrooms, among others, Jackson said.

Additionally, color accents on the floor of the building will be used to help students navigate throughout the campus. For example, green accents will be specific for one grade level with the idea being students can use the color to know what part of the building they are at, said Laura Sachtleben, global education leader at Stantec Architects.

Permitting requirements through the city of Manvel are expected to be completed by July. The project is supposed to go to bid in July, and the goal is to have a contract awarded by October. Construction is expected to last from October of this year through February 2024 with the first semester of classes set for fall 2024, Jackson said.
