The PISD board of trustees at its April 12 meeting unanimously approved Larry Berger to be the new superintendent of the district. The board named Berger the lone finalist at a special meeting March 22.
“All of PISD and everyone standing here, all I can say is thank you,” Berger said. “I am honored; I am humbled; and I am ready to serve this district.”
Berger’s first day as the superintendent will be April 13, but his three-year superintendent contract will begin July 1. Berger’s contract approved by the board will last from July 1 through June 30, 2025, trustee Lance Botkin said in his motion to approve Berger's contract.
Berger has 23 years of experience in education, including 15 years at PISD, according to the district. Prior to being the assistant superintendent for support services, which was his title before becoming superintendent, Berger was the district’s director of maintenance, operations and facilities and also spent time as principal and assistant principal at Pearland High School.
The approval by the board of trustees ends an almost three-month process in naming a new superintendent following previous Superintendent John Kelly’s decision to retire. The board granted Kelly a leave of absence in a March 1 special meeting.
“We are going to do great things because Pearland ISD is a great place, not because of me, but because of we,” Berger said.
