Alix Attaway is continuing her father’s legacy of bringing nostalgia from the United Kingdom in the form of food, snacks and novelties.

Attaway took over as CEO of Goodwoods British Market in 2020 and opened the Friendswood location in 2022 to be closer to home, she said.

“I love the community in Friendswood,” Attaway said. “I wanted my second store to be in Friendswood just because I love supporting the community and being in the community. It's my home, so it's just really special to me.”

What’s special about it?

Everything in Goodwoods is representative of the UK. Attaway said their most popular items are Heinz baked beans, Cadbury Crunchie chocolate bars, and Walker’s crisps—or potato chips.

Attaway said Europe’s food restrictions are much stricter than they are in the United States, so the store not only attracts those who miss their homeland, but people who care about the integrity of their food, she said.

The inspiration

Attaway grew up in the store that was established three decades ago in old town Spring, she said, sneaking to read Roald Dahl novels, operating the cash register, stocking shelves and connecting with neighbors.

When her father moved to Texas more than 30 years ago, Attaway said he missed their home in Sheffield, England. Goodwoods was a way to honor his life in Yorkshire and give back to people in his new community.

“So the idea is that we are selling memories,” Attaway said. “It's not just food. If you move to say, Germany, you're gonna miss Tex Mex [cuisine], right? That’s because food is such a strong memory.”
