The city of Friendswood annexed land near Lake Friendswood and could annex more in the future to extend Lake Friendswood Park on the city’s east side.

What you need to know

Friendswood City Council voted unanimously to annex roughly 1.3 acres of land from the Slone Subdivision into the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction at its July 7 meeting.

The move is part of a May interlocal agreement between Friendswood and League City, which aims to adjust their boundaries to expand the park.

League City had previously annexed the parcel, which lies near West League City Parkway, but voted unanimously to release it back to Friendswood, according to city documents.

What else?

Friendswood’s efforts to expand Lake Friendswood Park aren’t expected to stop with the 1.3-acre annexation, documents show.

City Council also unanimously approved a measure authorizing City Manager Morad Kabiri to begin the process of acquiring an additional 5.4 acres at the southeast corner of the lake.

The city is considering options for purchase, dedication or eminent domain—a process by which a city takes private property for public use.

In 2018, the property owner of that tract of land sued Friendswood, alleging that the city had built on his private property, according to court documents. Although litigation is ongoing, Kabiri recommended that the city pursue purchasing the land to “put this issue to bed.”
