West Castlewood Avenue in Friendswood will be closed from Cedarwood Avenue to Merriewood Drive on Aug. 3 to accommodate the Figgy Youth Triathalon.

The details

Friendswood City Council voted unanimously at its June 2 meeting to close that portion of West Castlewood Avenue on Aug. 3 from 7-10 a.m. to accommodate the Figgy Youth Triathlon.

The Friendswood Rotary Club designed the event for participants ages 5-15. It will feature swimming at the Stevenson Park pool, biking through city routes and running on nearby city park trails.

Those opposed

During the meeting's public comment portion, Friendswood resident Jeff Bucha, a resident of the West Castlewood neighborhood, voiced strong concern over the closure’s impact on his cul-de-sac, where he said several elderly residents live.

“I'm not trying to be selfish, but we live in a cul-de-sac, and there are several elderly people there,” Bucha said. “My wife also has a job where she is up and gone around six or seven, and it's back and forth of the house to do her job, and that would really impact her ability to get out and around.”

The plan

City Manager Morad Kabiri stated that emergency personnel would be on hand during the triathlon, providing residents with the opportunity to leave should they need to in the event of an emergency.
