This proposition does not create any new taxes or increase the city’s budget, Pecknold said. It instead formalizes processes to help ensure fairness, transparency and accountability within the department, Pecknold said.

“Essentially, it is a framework for human resources,” he said. “It creates a system where, regardless of who is in charge, the process remains the same.”

If the proposition is approved, Pecknold said it will bring stronger recruitment, as many applicants specifically seek out civil service departments and a clear promotional process, where firefighters know from Day 1 what is required to advance when they are ready.

“In addition, it supports consistent discipline by reducing the influence of politics and helping avoid perceived nepotism,” he said. “For the community, that means a more stable and professional fire department focused on delivering reliable service.”

One more thing

Voters can also decide on Proposition A, which is a city charter amendment that allows notices currently requiring newspaper publication to be potentially published by other means, such as on the city’s website.
