Friendswood ISD’s board of trustees reviewed two proposed options for the 2026-27 academic calendar at its Jan. 20 meeting but chose not to take action, opting instead for further discussion at a future workshop.
The District Advisory Committee, or DAC, recommended a revised “Option 2,” which moves fall break one week earlier than originally presented at a Dec. 8 meeting.
Following a recommendation from board President Tony Hopkins, trustees declined to approve the draft calendar at its Jan. 20 meeting.

For the approved 2025-26 academic year, fall break is scheduled for October 15-20. In the proposed 2026-27 calendar, those dates would be moved up to October 8-13.
Hopkins recommended delaying action on the calendar to allow for further discussion before final approval, expressing concern about how the changes could affect fine arts and athletic events scheduled during that period.
The background
The DAC reviewed multiple calendar drafts and gathered feedback from staff and community members, according to district documents.
Two initial options were presented to the board at its Dec. 8 meeting, both placing fall break on the third Wednesday or Thursday of October.
The revised “Option 2,” presented Jan. 20, moved fall break earlier to the second Thursday of October, in an effort to better align FISD’s calendar with neighboring school districts, said FISD Communications Director Lauren Traina.
The results
To gather feedback on the proposed 2026-27 academic calendar, FISD distributed separate surveys for the community and district staff.
Out of the nearly 400 community responses:
- 42% voted for Option 1
- 58% voted for Option 2
Out of the 90 district staff responses:
- 32% voted for Option 1
- 68% voted for Option 2

The board of trustees plans to review and discuss the proposed 2026-27 academic calendar at an upcoming workshop. The date has not yet been announced.
